MERCY Malaysia Sends an Assessment Team to Pakistan in Response to Floods
4 August 2010 - MERCY Malaysia has deployed a three-member
team to Peshawar today in response to the devastating floods that struck the
northern and central parts of Pakistan.
“We are responding to the international call for help from
the Government of Pakistan,” said MERCY Malaysia President, Dato’ Dr Ahmad
Faizal Perdaus.
The team is led by MERCY Malaysia’s Head of Relief
Operations, Mr Hew Cheong Yew and Senior Programme Officer, Mr Mohammad Said
Alhudzari Ibrahim, accompanied by a MERCY Malaysia’s volunteer, Dr. Mohammad
Iqbal Omar.
They will be conducting an on-the-ground assessment to
determine the humanitarian needs within the affected region.
“Our initial disaster
assessment team to Pakistan will ascertain the level of devastation, destroyed
infrastructure and most importantly, the health needs of the flood-affected
people. Our team will then advise on how MERCY Malaysia can best assist the
emergency response on the ground there,” said Dr Ahmad Faizal.
“We have been constantly updated by our local partner in
Pakistan, PATTAN, and with their assistance our team will be able to see how we
can best help in the most cost-effective manner,” he said.
(PATTAN is a
registered not-for-profit organisation and works with the socially, politically
and economically marginalised communities in Pakistan.)
MERCY Malaysia continued its partnership with The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, and ran 11 mobile clinics in Klang to offer primary healthcare to the stateless as well as marginalized communities.
