Malaysia Airlines Hands Over RM98,000 To MERCY Malaysia
Subang (8 April 2010): Malaysia Airlines’ “Change for Charity” campaign with MERCY Malaysia has received an overwhelming support from the public with a total of RM98,000 collected to date since the launch of the campaign in October 2009.
The contribution was handed over to MERCY Malaysia recently by Malaysia Airlines’ Senior General Manager External Relations, Dato’ Captain Nawawi Haji Awang.
This campaign is part of Malaysia Airlines’ contribution to the community and allows both organizations to establish a framework for strategic collaboration in humanitarian assistance.
“Malaysia Airlines is raising funds to aid organizations and charitable trusts under the Government-Link-Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme,” said Nawawi.
Passengers on board Malaysia Airlines can place their change in sealable envelopes that can be found in the back pocket of every seat on selected international flights. The envelopes will then be collected by the cabin crew. These will then be placed in tamper-proof bags and subsequently channeled to MERCY Malaysia.
“During these flights, the cabin crew will announce or explain personally to passengers the information on the campaign and if applicable, the collection time of the envelopes”, he added.
Through this partnership, MERCY Malaysia has agreed that trained and suitable MAS employees may volunteer to join relief missions in or outside Malaysia. The training program will be done by Training Department of MERCY Malaysia at its Kuala Lumpur office.
Funds collected through this initiative will be channeled towards the following projects carried out by MERCY Malaysia:
• Cleft Lip and Palate Programme in Bangladesh and Cambodia • Disaster Risk Reduction Programme for schools in Malaysia • Rehabilitation Health Centres set up in Cambodia • Oral Rehydration Therapy • Emergency Fund – Humanitarian relief
Malaysia Airlines and MERCY Malaysia has been in partnership since 2004 to provide support and relief to victims of natural disasters. Customers who are keen to contribute outside the flight can also do so at the MERCY Malaysia donation boxes placed at Malaysia Airlines ticket offices.
MERCY Malaysia continued its partnership with The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, and ran 11 mobile clinics in Klang to offer primary healthcare to the stateless as well as marginalized communities.
