MERCY Malaysia Volunteers and Akedemi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) cadets during the two-day training

The School Response Preparedness workshop aims to educate school children in disaster response preparedness by providing a practical and hands-on activities in schools and engaging the students to be responsible for their own safety and others during emergency and crisis situation.

Akademi Laut Malaysia has joined MERCY Malaysia in this effort and we have conducted two days of trainings for our volunteers and ALAM cadets on the workshop modules. There are three modules in SRP; First-Aid, Health & Hygiene, Mapping & Evacuation & Early Warning & Communication. During the workshop, the modules will be assigned to three different task forces led by MERCY Malaysia volunteers and the ALAM cadets.

On 25th September 2010, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Department conducted a one day workshop which was attended by 13 of our volunteers, to run through the modules. During the workshop, the volunteers contributed ideas and actively involved in the practical of the modules. They also provided us with inputs and discussions, which were then utilised to improve the content of all three modules.

On 26th September 2010, nine volunteers and four DRR staff members conducted another round of workshop for the cadets at ALAM. The cadets were introduced to the modules and made preparation to conduct similar activities with school children, scheduled first at SMK Rahmat Melaka on 23 and 24 October 2010.
