MERCY Malaysia Assists Over 2,383 Families in Johor Flood

8 February 2011 - MERCY Malaysia sent three separate teams to Johor and has assisted about 6,581 beneficiaries from 2,383 families for its domestic floods response to the flood victims in Johor, Malaysia.

“Since 31 January 2011, we have distributed a total of 2,383 hygiene kits at 39 locations in Johor. They include Bukit Tiram, Sg. Tiram, Kuala Sengka, Kg. Jawa Lenga, Kg. Peruh, Kg. Pucuh, Jementah and Buloh Kasap in Johor Bahru, Kluang, Pagoh and Segamat. The people in Pagoh also obtained primary health care check-ups when we set up our mobile clinics in two areas over the last weekend,” said MERCY Malaysia President, Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus.

“In floods -where people have lost their personal belongings or relocated to evacuation centres- it is difficult for survivors to maintain their daily routines. Our hygiene kit contains various items such as toothpaste, soap and other hygiene products to enable flood survivors maintain good personal hygiene. This preventive measure goes a long way against the spread of water-borne diseases and skin-related illnesses,” he said.

Meanwhile, the MERCY Malaysia team in Sri Lanka has been actively involved on the ground since they arrived on the 19 January. Having completed the health assessment in Ampara and Batticaloa, MERCY Malaysia will now be focusing on the needs of pregnant women.

“We’re looking to support the needs of expectant mothers as they are particularly vulnerable in disasters. We will be distributing the Maternity Kit, which will provide basic items such as nappies and nutritional supplements to prepare mothers in case of delivery. The kits will be targeted to mothers with 30-36 weeks of pregnancy to prepare for the newborn baby,” he added.
