MERCY Malaysia Receives RM1.2 million from Berjaya Corporations
13 April 2011 – MERCY Malaysia received a tremendous boost to sustain its humanitarian efforts with a donation of RM1.2million given by Berjaya Corporations at the Berjaya Cares Foundation ceremony yesterday. The donation is pledged for the MERCY Malaysia General Humanitarian Fund, the standard channel launched in 2003 to generate reserve funds for future disasters, as well as strengthening local disaster preparedness.

MERCY Malaysia President, Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, acknowledges the need for sustainable funding, and attributes MERCY Malaysia’s survival due to the generosity of the Malaysian public and corporate sectors alike.

“MERCY Malaysia is known for its work during emergency response to natural disasters and conflict situations, as recently highlighted with our response to Japan and Libya. But emergency response is not all that we do. We stay on and help, long after the disaster is forgotten,” said MERCY Malaysia President, Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus.

“Education and preparedness for the community is also an important focus for us. Our local School Preparedness Programmes -in collaboration with the Ministry of Education- also helps to prepare young Malaysians for future disasters. Out of the total contribution from Berjaya Corporations, RM165,000.00 will be spent to sustain preparedness programmes, as we are committed to building our local capacities,” he said.

“As well as our local programmes, we have on-going projects in India, Cambodia, and Myanmar, to name but a few. Our clinics in Afghanistan and Sudan continue to provide critical health services despite the on-going conflict. In Bangladesh, we continue to provide free cleft lip operations to babies and children, and help families to access arsenic-free water. No matter which country we are in, you can be assured that your donation is helping the people who need it most,” he concluded.

Proceeds from the MERCY Malaysia General Humanitarian Fund will be channelled to on-going relief efforts and sustainable programmes at various countries where MERCY Malaysia operates in.
