April 2011 –
MERCY Malaysia will deploy a second team to Libya tomorrow morning to serve the
medical needs in the Al-Beyda General Hospital in the eastern part of Libya.
“Located
two hours away by road east of Benghazi, the 600-bed hospital serves a
catchment area of approximately 250,000 people which extends from Al Marsh in
the east, to Darnah in the west. The hospital has lost many of its expatriate medical
staff, and as such our team will be there to make up for some of the shortfall”,
said MERCY Malaysia President, Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus.
Led
by Mohammad Said Alhudzari, Senior Programme Officer from Relief Operations
Department, the team will consist of a logistician as well as three specialised
volunteer nurses.
“Upon completion of their three-week
assignment, we plan to replace them with another team. As long as the hospital continues
to experience this staffing problem, we will try to sustain the services, subject
to the availability of funds”, he said, adding that further assessments may be
carried out in the cities of Ajdabiya and Misrata should the security situation
improve.
The
first MERCY Malaysia team to Libya was deployed on April 2, comprising four
personnel to assess the conditions in Libya.
They
arrived back in Malaysia on Saturday, 16 April 2011.
