MERCY Malaysia Donates RM45,000 worth of Medical Equipment to Libya
2 June 2011 – MERCY Malaysia has donated medical equipments worth over RM45,000 in its recent mission in Benghazi in Libya.
“We donated a suction machine and medical instruments for the Maternity Ward of Al Beyda Hospital, and The Central Medical Store (CMS) in Benghazi received medical supplies which include sterile gloves, defibrillator, patient monitor, stretcher, anaesthetic medicine, intravenous drips and oxygen cylinder. A total of USD15,000 was spent on the equipment and supplies, all of which were purchased in Egypt to minimise logistical costs”, said MERCY Malaysia President Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus.
The two locations were identified through a recent assessment in Benghazi. Prior to the donation, MERCY Malaysia sent two medical teams to Libya.
“The first team of nurses have safely returned to Malaysia on 16 May after a 3-week mission of supplementing the medical services of the hospital there. Another team have just completed their mission last week on 22 May 2011. As we have a policy of not sending our teams to areas where active fighting is taking place, if we deploy future teams they will not be entering western Libya. At the moment, we will continue procuring medical supplies for CMS in Benghazi according to the needs list from World Health Organization (WHO)”, he said, adding that MERCY Malaysia is currently exploring various options to continue serving humanitarian needs in Libya.
