13 June 2011– MERCY Malaysia has deployed a
six-person team to Tunisia yesterday to support the Tataoine General Hospital to
serve refugees displaced by the conflict in Libya.
“Our team will be there for two
weeks to supplement the services set up by Merlin, a medical relief NGO based
in the UK. We have partnered with Merlin UK before when we fundraised for Haiti
in 2010, and the presence of our team in the hospital will allow our partner to
expand their services to Nalut,” said MERCY Malaysia President Dato’ Dr. Ahmad
Faizal Mohd Perdaus.
“We will be sending one orthopaedic surgeon, an
anaesthetist and two nurses to support Merlin’s medical services,” he said,
adding that the team will be accompanied by MERCY Malaysia Senior Adviser, Dr.
Paul Mettler and Programme Officer, Saw Yu Shen.
In the
meantime, he said MERCY Malaysia will continue procuring medical supplies for the
Central Medical Store in Benghazi according to the needs list from the World Health
Organisation (WHO).
This is the third team to be deployed in response to
the Libyan conflict, after the return of the earlier teams on 16 and 22 May. MERCY Malaysia has also donated
medical equipments worth over RM45,000 in its recent mission in Benghazi.
