MERCY Malaysia Donates RM45,000 of Equipment to Help Libyan Temporary Asylum Seekers
1 July 2011– MERCY
Malaysia has donated RM45,000 worth of orthopedic equipment to the
Tataouine Regional Hospital recently after a 15-day mission to provide
orthopedic surgery support for Libyan war casualties in eastern Tunisia. “The
team –consisting of one orthopedic surgeon, one anaesthetist, two
nurses and two MERCY Malaysia staff- safely returned on 26 June. The
regional hospital has now set up a referral system to forward cases to
other better equipped private hospitals in other cities, and they have
increased the number of doctors in their services. As such we saw
little need to stay any longer”, said MERCY Malaysia President Dato’
Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus. In addition to their role
at the hospital, the team also supported the Tunisia Red Crescent
dispensary and treated 62 cases there, the recipients being primarily
women and children of Libyan temporary asylum-seekers. “As
we have a policy of not sending our teams to areas where active
fighting is taking place, we will be closely monitoring the situation
in western Libya prior to future team deployments”, he said, adding
that MERCY Malaysia is currently exploring various options to continue
serving humanitarian needs due to the conflict. Prior to
the recent mission, MERCY Malaysia sent two medical teams to Libya in
May and donated RM45,000 worth of equipment to Al-Beyda Hospital and
the Benghazi Central Medical Store. Concerned
individuals and organisations can donate to the MERCY Malaysia General
Humanitarian Fund through the following bank accounts: MAYBANK (account name: MERCY HUMANITARIAN FUND, account number: 5621-7950-4126, ABA Swift Code: MBBEMYKLA), or CIMB Bank (account name: MERCY Malaysia, account number: 1424-000-6561053, ABA Swift Code: CIBBMYKL). Donations via cheque are payable to MERCY MALAYSIA To donate online, please visit www.mercy.org.my
MERCY Malaysia sent seven teams (consisting medical surgeon and logistic personnel) to Gaza in December 31, 2008 to conduct a rapid assessment of humanitarian needs of the people affected by the conflict and focused on the supply of medical needs and medicine to the embattled region.
