MERCY Malaysia Responds to the Critical Flooding in Thailand
MERCY Malaysia sent a 2-member needs assessment team to Thailand, consisting of MERCY Malaysia's General Manager of Operations, Ms Takako Izumi and Relief Operations Programme Officer, Mr Saw Yu-Shen. They left for Bangkok on 30 October 2011 and will remain there for two weeks.
"Thailand has been plagued by the worst flooding in decades since July 2011 and it was reported that 1/3 of the country's provinces have been at least partly under water. It is hard to determine the real needs of the victims unless we go down to ground level to obtain first-hand information." said Dato' Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, MERCY Malaysia President.
"More than 100,000 people have left their homes to seek help in around 1,700 shelters and MERCY Malaysia would like to find the most effective ways to provide the necessary aid. We have discussed on the issues with the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok and will keep them informed of the developments of our work. We shall continue to address the current needs, make our assessment in other provinces affected by the flood and link up with a local partner before we firm up our plans on our efforts in Thailand." Dr Faizal added further.
