Deployment of MERCY Malaysia Mission to the Philippines

KUALA LUMPUR – MERCY Malaysia is deploying a four-person team to Mindanao, Philippines, in the light of the recent natural disaster that hit the country towards the end of last year.

On 16 December 2011, the tropical storm Washi made its landfall at North Mindanao and Central Visayas regions of the Philippines. According to a report by the Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), as of 6 January 2012, more than 429, 000 people are being served inside and outside 54 evacuation centres throughout the region. The storm has thus far cost the lives of 1,263 people whilst leaving 4,663 injured and a further 101 persons missing.

The team, led by MERCY Malaysia Relief Operations Programme Officer Jessica Wong Ming Shi, will be in Philippines for two weeks beginning 7 January 2012. The objective of the mission is to conduct an evaluation of the humanitarian needs faced by the affected population and to identify gaps in the current aid provision in order to form an effective response.

Joining Jessica on the mission will be MERCY Malaysia officer Collin Abel Nathan as well as volunteers from our Sabah Chapter, Matron Anita @ Ani Bt Abdul Malek and Medical Practitioner Dr. Muhamad Yaakub Bin Arifin.
