MERCY Malaysia Hands Over Dialysis Machine to Mirpurkhas Civil Hospital in Pakistan
KUALA
LUMPUR – Efforts to reconstruct and rehabilitate health centres in flood hit
Pakistan by MERCY Malaysia has been spurred with the donation of a dialysis
machine to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Civil Hospital in Mirpurkhas.
The
Consul General of Malaysia to Karachi, Abu Bakar Mamat handed over the dialysis
machine to the hospital’s Head of Dialysis Centre, Dr. Tariq Arain at a
ceremony held at the hospital yesterday.
Norazam
Ab Samah, MERCY Malaysia Vice President II, who was in attendance to witness
the handover said, “MERCY Malaysia is certainly pleased to be able to provide
help to the people of Sindh. We will also be rehabilitating a Rural Health
Centre in Tando Jan Muhammad as part of our plans. Local contractors will be
evaluated and selected by MERCY Malaysia’s technical consultant for the tender
process and we will also provide technical consultation for the project during
the whole reconstruction period.”
Pakistan
was hit by severe flooding late last year following heavy monsoon rains that
affected the livelihood of approximately 9 million people mostly in the Sindh
province and northern parts of Punjab. In response, MERCY Malaysia sent a team
in October 2011 and distributed 500 family hygiene kits. Earlier this year
MERCY Malaysia deployed an assessment team and subsequently initiated several
health and hygiene projects with donations from the Malaysian Government.
Two
mobile clinics have been set up since March, providing primary healthcare to
beneficiaries in the flood hit areas. The clinics, set up in collaboration with
a local organisation, have so far provided consultations to more than 21,000 individuals.
MERCY
Malaysia has also distributed hygiene kits to more than 1,500 families this
year and has begun projects of installing latrines, hand-pumps and water
filtration systems to villages in the Sindh province.
