MERCY Malaysia has been working in Indonesia since year 2000. We began
our work in Maluku where Our team of doctors and volunteers worked in
small health clinics and provided mobile medical services in villages
in Ternate Island and Ambon Island. A health centre was later set up
and we provided free medical care for the refugees in Ternate Island.
In August 2001, the beautiful Nias Island was hit by major flood and
landslides. MERCY Malaysia again assisted Indonesia by sending our
medical teams to provide medical relief.

On Sunday, 26 December 2004, a great earthquake measuring 9.0 on
Richter scale that occurred off the west coast of Northern Sumatra resulted
in a Tsunami striking all the littoral regions of the Indian Ocean in
countries like Somalia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia (Aceh), Thailand (Phuket)
and even Malaysia. MERCY Malaysia dispatched its Rapid Assessment and
Emergency Response Team on 27th December 2004, arriving in Aceh on an
Indonesian military aircraft from Medan and stationed themselves at the
Kesdam Military Hospital in Banda Aceh – the only functioning hospital.
MERCY Malaysia continued its reconstruction and rehabilitation projects
in Aceh and Nias following the Indian Ocean Tsunami and earthquake in
2004. When an earthquake struck Central Java in May 2006, we responded and provided emergency and humanitarian aid to the communities affected in Yogjakarta.
