MERCY Malaysia is a not for profit organisation focusing on providing medical relief and sustainable health related development for vulnerable communities. Established in 1999, MERCY Malaysia began as a medical relief society expanding its programming to include activities such as vocational training centres, water and sanitation, food and non-food item distribution, and shelter construction. . Through recent strategic planning activities, MERCY Malaysia has defined its 4 areas of intervention as Health, Water & Sanitation, Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development, where health-related programmes continue to account for over three-fourths of its portfolio. The Kuala Lumpur Head Office staff of 27 centrally manages projects. There are currently 8 countries where MERCY Malaysia is operational, either directly or indirectly working with partners.
In November 2007 MEFCY Malaysia completed formal application for an audit to be carried out against the HAP Humanitarian Accountability and Quality Management Standard (2007).
The audit, comprising two registered auditors and the certification manager, audited MERCY Malaysia in relation to its conformity with the HAP 2007 Standard. The audit was carried out between 1st and 10th November 2007.
A quality assurance audit, consists of a sample testing process incorporating an examination of documentary evidence, interviews with MERCY Malaysia staff both at the Head Office in Kuala Lumpur and at a selected field site (Aceh Indonesian), interviews of beneficiaries and partners and direct observation of practice. Coupled to this a review of the self-assessment statements jointly summarised from the 8 country programmes was considered.
Based on the findings of the audit it is our pleasure to recommend MERCY Malaysia for certification, validating their quality assurance process against the HAP Standard.
