MERCY Malaysia is proud to announce that Mona
Hanim Sheikh Mahmud has taken on the position of General Manager as of
1st August 2007.
Prior to joining MERCY Malaysia, Mona was
heading the Special Project Division at the Malaysian AIDS Council
(MAC), a national coordinating agency in response to HIV/AIDS in
Malaysia. She has been involved in HIV/AIDS work for approximately 8
years.
Her professional journey began as a tax accountant in
Australia, returning to Malaysia as a business proprietor and
subsequently venturing into Public Relations and Event Management.
Throughout her journey, Mona was constantly drawn to the plight of
vulnerable communities and spent considerable time working as a
volunteer. Finally, she decided to dedicate her energy to community
work.
“I was in a huge dilemma about joining MERCY when I
was offered the position. HIV/AIDS is an issue very close to my heart.
However, my first month in MERCY has been fulfilling as MERCY truly
embodies the term ‘humanitarian work’ and beyond,” said Mona. “I am
humbled by the achievements of MERCY as an organization and now, I am
proud to represent MERCY Malaysia while working with an amazing team of
people.”
Undeterred by her limited knowledge of disaster risk
management, Mona maintains a positive outlook. She brings to MERCY her
vast experience in strategic planning, project management and community
development, and as a quick learner will face the challenges that she
will inevitably have to face. As MERCY is currently undergoing an
organizational restructure, Mona is honored to have been entrusted with
the highly crucial task of guiding and strengthening MERCY’s
Secretariat.
Educated in Australia with a Bachelor’s degree
of Commerce in Accountancy, Mona spent many happy schooling years in
Bukit Bintang Girls School, Kuala Lumpur.
Her favourite quote is:
“Never
doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people can change the
world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”
- Margaret Mead
