MERCY Malaysia Continues To Deploy Emergency Medical Relief Teams To Yogyakarta PDF Print E-mail

As of 1 June 2006, MERCY Malaysia has deployed six (6) Emergency Medical Relief teams to Yogyakarta, Indonesia to assist the affected communities. A total of 24 mission members consisting of 15 medical personnel and nine (9) non-medical volunteers have been deployed.


MERCY Malaysia has deployed its sixth Emergency Medical Relief team to Yogyakarta in efforts assist affected communities of the recent 6.2 Richter scale earthquake thus, bringing the total deployment of mission member to 24 members consisting of 15 medical personnel and nine (9) non-medical volunteers.

yogya_mercyAs of 31 May 2006, officials reported up to 5,846 people are confirmed dead, more than 30, 000 are in need of medical attention and between 100, 000 to 600, 000 people are displaced from their homes. Worst hit areas are reported to be Bantul, Yogyakarta, Klaten, Wonosari and Kulon Progo.

The teams are currently performing medical procedures and providing immediate medical aid at Rumah Sakit Umum Pendidikan (RSUP) Dr. Sardjito, Rumah Sakit (RS) Karisma and Rumah Sakit (RS) Batestha, Yogyakarta.


MISSION ONE (1): 28 May 2006 (Sunday),

The first mission travelled by a special United Nations Humanitarian Air Services (UNHAS) flight from Banda Aceh along with other international organisations based in Aceh and two (2) tonnes of medical supplies contributed by the international agencies from Aceh. The first team had secured ground logistics for the subsequent teams coming in from Kuala Lumpur.


MISSION TWO (2): 28 May 2006 (Sunday),

2. Sister Che Tah Hanafi, Senior Nurse and MERCY Malaysia’s Medical Coordinator
3. Dr Shalimar Abdullah, Orthopaedic Surgeon and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
4. Major (R) Haji Abdul Rashid Mahmud, Security Coordinator and MERCY Malaysia volunteer

Mission Two (2) brought medical supplies worth at RM 100,000 consisting of antibiotics, antiseptics, analgesic, anaesthesia drugs, Plasma Expander, Orthopaedic Equipment (for surgery), Implant Oropedy and WHO Kit (1 unit).


MISSION THREE (3): 29 May 2006 (Monday),

5. Noor Hisham Abdul, Logistician and MERCY Malaysia volunteer

MISSION FOUR (4): 30 May 2006 (Tuesday)

1. Anita @ Ani Abdul Malik, Senior Nurse and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
2. Mohd Hanif Adam, Medical Assistant and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
3. Ishak Abdul Kadir, Logistician and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
4. Lye Kim Soon, Medical Adviser and MERCY Malaysia volunteer

Medical supplies worth over RM 28, 000 consisting of antibiotics, analgesics, painkillers and disposable surgical items were sponsored by Pharmaniaga Berhad in aid of the earthquake were brought in by Mission Four.

MISSION FIVE (5): 31 May 2006 (Wednesday)

1. Dr Kamisah Mohd Taib, Anaesthetic and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
2. Sister Noraini Rahim, Senior Nurse and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
3. Sister Norkamisah Abd Majid, Senior Nurse and MERCY Malaysia volunteer

Mission Five (5) brought in 9 boxes of Plaster-of-Paris (POP) bandages to teams in Yogyakarta.

MISSION SIX (6): 1 JUNE 2006 (Thursday)

1. Dr Didi Indra Tjahya, Orthopaedic Surgeon and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
2. Dr Teo Shu Shing, Anaesthetic and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
3. Siti Zakiah Pokari, Operating Theatre Nurse and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
4. Che Mahmud Mohd Nordin, Logistician and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
5. Chin Kit Sen, Photographer and MERCY Malaysia volunteer
6. Puteri Rohayu Megat Mohamed Yusof, MERCY Malaysia’s Relief Operations Officer

Mission Six (6) brought one (1) box of soft band and orthopaedic equipments to Yogyakarta.

MERCY Malaysia’s is scheduling its tentative Mission Seven (7) to Yogyakarta on 7 June 2006, Wednesday.

MERCY Malaysia expects to continue deploying medical teams during this emergency phase which will be for approximately 1 ½ months. Assessment of the need for our continued presence after emergency phase will be conducted concurrently.

MERCY Malaysia also collaborated with Malaysia Airlines through its “Hope for Humanity” partnership signed in February 2006, who sponsored flight tickets to MERCY Malaysia’s mission members for this relief missions.

MERCY Malaysia’s is coordinating its deployments with United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) and Satuan Koordinasi Pelaksana Penanggulangan Bencana dan Penanganan Pengungsi (SATKORLAK PBP).
