Yesterday, 15 June 2006, MERCY Malaysia sent its eighth Emergency Medical Relief team to Yogyakarta in its efforts to continually assist the affected communities. Three (3) members that were deployed were Nor Azizah Malik (Nurse), Fatmawati Latada (Counsellor) and Muhammad Hapis Jamil (Logistician). Thus, bringing the total deployment of mission members to 34 comprising of 22 medical personnel and 12 non-medical volunteers.
MERCY Malaysia has also begun its Psychosocial Intervention Programme with the local communities specifically in Yogyakarta and Bantul. Since the Emergency Response phase is slowly phasing out, MERCY Malaysia is shifting its concentration to efforts in helping children and adults to overcome their post trauma of the earthquake.
They are currently working at two (2) locations :
- Universiti Gajah Mada, Yogyakarta
- SMA Negeri Satu Pandak, Bantul
Another programme that MERCY Malaysia has embarked on is the Vaccination and Health Education programmes whereby it is being implemented through our Mobile Clinics in the areas of Klaten, Prambanan and Bantul. This programme is deemed necessary as there is a rise of tetanus cases in these areas.
