MERCY Malaysia’s President, Datuk Dr. Jemilah Mahmood signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malaysia Airlines’ Chairman,
Dato’ Dr. Munir Abdul Majid at the Malaysia Airlines headquarters
today, confirming the partnership renewal for disaster relief
initiatives for another year.
“As we prepare to face the growing challenges that our future inevitably promises due to the undeniable fact that global warming has become a reality, MERCY Malaysia realizes that in order to rise above these trials, we need all the support we can glean especially from the public and corporate sector in Malaysia,” said Dr. Jemilah. “And we are proud to note that Malaysia Airlines has been an exemplary example of this essential benevolence through the MAS-MERCY Malaysia partnership that has been pivotal to MERCY Malaysia’s operations and growth.
“Today, I humbly thank Malaysia’s national carrier for renewing this partnership with us,” added Dr. Jemilah.
MERCY Malaysia’s President also praised Malaysia Airlines for their community relations contribution that allows both organisations to continue the established framework for strategic collaboration through this humanitarian assistance program.
“This commitment allows us to continue our quest to fulfill our role as a humanitarian organisation that is both transparent and accountable to donors and beneficiaries,” said Dr. Jemilah. “Therefore, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to Malaysia Airlines for renewing their pledge for support to MERCY Malaysia – and most importantly – for believing in us.”
Among the areas of collaboration of the renewed MoU are:
- Mission Deployment: Air Passage
Special fares to assist deployment of teams during disasters and excess luggage allowance.
- Fundraising and Promotions through Malaysia Airlines
Malaysia Airlines will enable MERCY Malaysia to organise fundraising activities through numerous channels like placement of donations boxes at selected locations within Malaysia Airlines’ premises, distribution of its information/donation flyers in Malaysia Airlines’ in-flight magazine Going Places, and screening of a one-minute informational clip on Malaysia Airlines’ in-flight entertainment channel on all international flights.
- Training for Malaysia Airlines staff and skills for Emergency situations
In return for the above, MERCY Malaysia will train Malaysia Airlines’ staff on relief/humanitarian work for possible participation in MERCY Malaysia’s relief missions in Malaysia and overseas, and also provide relevant support to Malaysia Airlines’ Emergency Operations Centre when requested.
MERCY Malaysia was also presented with a cheque at the ceremony for RM 60,000 from the proceeds of the Temptations Inflight sales on Malaysia Airlines flights during the initial tenure of the MoU.
“As our nation advances into the 50th year of independence, we Malaysians must heighten our engagement for worthy social and humanitarian efforts,” said Dato’ Dr. Munir. “At Malaysia Airlines we are thus pleased with the renewal of this partnership as we have been able to successfully consolidate our humanitarian and disaster relief support with MERCY Malaysia, a Malaysian organization of international repute, for the past one year.
“During 2006, we provided about 50 air tickets worth more than RM 35,000 to MERCY Malaysia members and around 1,000 kilograms additional excess baggage waiver worth RM 18,500 for humanitarian missions to Indonesia.”
MERCY Malaysia also collected more than RM11,000 from the MERCY Malaysia donation boxes that were placed in selected locations in Malaysia Airlines’ premises.
Added Dato’ Dr. Munir, “Based on the success of these efforts, we will endeavor to ensure meaningful engagement of both our passengers and staff for the continued success of this partnership.”
