MERCY Malaysia Sends Team To Manado, Sulawesi PDF Print E-mail

Torrential rains have caused massive floods and landslides at Sulawesi’s Northern Province of Indonesia. As such MERCY Malaysia is preparing its Relief & Set-Up team to provide aid as early as tomorrow (24 Feb 2006).

To date, 32 people are confirmed dead * and approximately 20, 000 more are affected by massive floods and landslides caused by heavy rain which has been hitting Sulawesi’s Northern Province for the past several days. Heaviest loss of life was reported to be in the provincial capital of Manado, Sulawesi and casualties are rising. Those who managed to evacuate from the floods and landslides are staying in district mosques, churches and schools.

MERCY Malaysia will send a Medical Relief and Assessment team to Manado, Sulawesi. The team comprises of MERCY Malaysia’s assessment staff and medical volunteers to provide emergency relief to those in need.

“We are currently making arrangements on the deployment of our team on the next available flight to Manado to offer medical assistance as well as to see how we could effectively help our neighbours and provide immediate aid to those affected” commented Shareen Shariza Dato’ Abdul Ghani, Chief Operating Officer, MERCY Malaysia.
