On November 15, 2007, cyclone Sidr disrupted the lives of some 8.5 million people in south-western Bangladesh. Shortly thereafter, MERCY, through the intermediary of local medical teams, started to provide medical assistance. 8,488 patients in 36 remote villages had been treated by December.
From January 18 to March 15, 2008, MERCY supported a water, sanitation and hygiene project implemented by the Dhaka Community Hospital. It benefited some 4,000 cyclone-affected families.

As many needs remain to be addressed, MERCY is now planning to continue assisting the victims of Sidr through rural health projects.
