UEM Group of Companies yesterday launched the UEM Alert team which
provides a platform for UEM employees to contribute their time and
skills through volunteering with MERCY Malaysia.
To mark the beginning of this partnership, a two-day workshop was held
by MERCY Malaysia representatives, including Datuk Dr. Jemilah Mahmood,
to train a group of UEM employees from across their business units on
volunteerism in general, as well as on volunteering opportunities with
MERCY Malaysia. During the sessions, the UEM Alert team members were
exposed to issues that included disasters and their common myths; ideas
for partnerships between corporations and NGOs; as well as logistics
and communications training. Additionally, a simulation exercise to set
up tents at disaster sites was conducted.
Throughout the two-day Volunteer Induction Programme, MERCY Malaysia
representatives imparted knowledge on the 30 UEM employees who were
present, teaching them ways through which to provide humanitarian
relief work responsibly as well as the planning, systems and processes
involved in the provision of aid.
The employees involved were made up of representatives from business
units that included Engineering and Construction, Property, Health,
Expressways, Technology, Environment, Manufacturing and Logistics. The
programme was sponsored by UEM Group and was carried out at the UEM
Leadership Centre in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.
