MERCY Malaysia has sent in medical and humanitarian relief to Johor in the form of a mobile clinic as well as family hygiene kits to alleviate the plight of those affected by current floods.

Since MERCY Malaysia began providing assistance on Tuesday, hundreds of people have been treated at MERCY Malaysia’s mobile clinic that was held throughout Tuesday night till the early hours of the morning. Hygiene kits including toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, towels, diapers and sanitary napkins were distributed to families. Blankets and mats were also handed out to those affected by the floods.

“MERCY Malaysia’s Johor chapter has been working actively for more than two days already and we are continuing our medical and humanitarian relief efforts,” said Shareen Dato’ Abdul Ghani, Chief Operating Officer of MERCY Malaysia. “We are also constantly monitoring and assessing the situation so as to provide the most appropriate aid to those afflicted.

“Once the emergency response phase is over, MERCY Malaysia will further assess future needs by drafting a plan of action to assist the affected communities,” added Shareen. “We also hope to recommend community-based disaster preparedness training in the future.”

In Johor, nearly 45,000 people from over 180 areas have been evacuated to 274 relief centres at 6 o’clock this morning. Other affected areas include Melaka, Kelantan, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan.

Said Shareen, “MERCY Malaysia will continue to provide the necessary support to those afflicted in Johor as well as in other flood-hit regions in the country.”
