MERCY Malaysia’s Assessment Team Continues To Assess The Situation |

Kuala Lumpur, 28 July 2006 - The rising conflict in Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza as well as Israel continues to create a humanitarian disaster with at least 150,000 people displaced from their homes, and around 600 civilians killed and many more injured each day.
In response to this crisis, MERCY Malaysia Assessment team on its
second day of the mission has held meetings and conducted visit to a
refugee centre in Damascus.
“The security situation in Lebanon is extremely poor while in Syria
security is under control. Many Lebanese refugees are located mainly in
private homes and public buildings like schools provided by the Syrian
Government. There are 25 refugee centres in and around Damascus”
commented Assoc. Prof. Dr P Shanmuhasutharam, Team Leader for MERCY
Malaysia Assessment Team who is currently in Damascus, Syria.
The team plans to continue its assessments in the other refugee
centres. Given the complexity of the situation we are developing
partnerships with NGOs in Lebanon and Syria to mobilise aid and to
facilitate our humanitarian response effectively.
Aid supplies and contributions from donors mainly from the Middle East
countries are being sent into Lebanon by the Syrian Arab Red Crescent
(SARC) to several places like the Lebanese Ministry of Health, Lebanese
Red Cross as well as High Committee for Relief in Lebanon.
MERCY Malaysia’s plan is to procure much needed medical supplies and
work in partnership with Lebanese NGOs to deliver these supplies into
Lebanon. Our work will mainly be in Syria until the security situation
improves and a humanitarian corridor is established.
MERCY Malaysia was also informed by representative from the Lebanon
Embassy in Malaysia on the much needed medical supplies which include
medicine for chronic illnesses like hypertension and diabetics,
paediatric formula, as well as diapers and clean water purifier.
MERCY Malaysia will mobilise its supplies from Syria and neighbouring
countries. All contribution to our fund will be used to procure the
much needed medical supplies and deployment of medical personnel.
MERCY Malaysia’s Middle East Aid Fund
MERCY Malaysia is appealing to the public to send only cash donations
in aid of its Middle East Aid Fund. Cheque contributions can be made
