Tuesday, 18 July 2006 - MERCY Malaysia has decided to ‘stand down’ from deploying mission
teams to Pangandaran, Central Java in aid of the recent earthquake
measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale at 15:19 local time. The underwater
earthquake triggered an approximately three metre high tsunami that
struck the Pangandaran, Ciamis, Cilacap and Kebumen Districts in
Central Java*.
“We were advised by our local partners that the
Indonesian Government and local authorities’ are able to manage the
situation efficiently. Furthermore, the disaster being a localised one
and there were no widespread destruction, MERCY Malaysia has made the
decision to stand down from taking further actions. However, we are
monitoring the situation closely” commented Shareen Shariza Dato’ Abdul
Ghani, Chief Operating Officer of MERCY Malaysia.
MERCY Malaysia
has established a base camp in Yogyakarta, Central Java following the
earthquake that hit on 27 May 2006. This base camp will also assess and
monitor the situation in Pangandaran and other affected areas for
latest updates and response.
