Global Flying Hospitals Partners MERCY Malaysia PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 January 2007
The hallmark of a developed nation is not only of infrastructure, education or commerce, but of the will and ability of that nation to help suffering people of other countries with humanitarian support.

Today, the leadership of MERCY Malaysia and Global Flying Hospitals signed a Memorandum of Understanding that moves Malaysia closer to becoming a regional player in the humanitarian arena. This MoU now enables MERCY Malaysia to create a broader footprint as they meet the needs of suffering people in emergency, disaster or programmed missions.

Global Flying Hospitals is the exciting new paradigm in humanitarian medical care for a very uncertain and hurting world. Known as GFH, the organization has chosen Malaysia to base operations and build a hub. The organization is currently sourcing aircraft in order to build a fleet of flying hospitals; Boeing 747s refurbished into high-tech surgical hospitals, supported by Hercules Cargo aircraft to ferry medical field clinics to the world’s four corners.

Neill Newton, GFH’s Founder and Chairman said, “The GFH vision burns with new hope for our world; to provide free medical treatment to tens of thousands of suffering people in developing countries worldwide. Our problems are mostly man-made, from terror, war, poverty and medical needs. If this be the case, then surely healing and treatment should also be man-made. GFH’s vision is to build a new way of healing, to reverse the trends … and to transform our planet, on a grand scale!”

Said Datuk Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, President of MERCY Malaysia, “MERCY Malaysia is indeed fortunate to foster this partnership with the Global Flying Hospitals. We have always endeavored to be a rapid response organization as saving time saves lives post-disaster. This partnership will be able to offer us an opportunity to enhance our mobility and impact in the delivery of emergency humanitarian services.

“ In addition, with the support of a flying hospital, we can also offer capacity building and training in non-crisis situations and a wonderful opportunity to expose Malaysian volunteers to humanitarian work and make our mark globally,” added Dr. Jemilah.

This MoU will provide MERCY Malaysia the added advantage and ability to mobilize its humanitarian missions through the use of fully-equipped and crewed flying hospitals or cargo aircraft. MERCY Malaysia has a proven track record of speed, immediate relief and sustainable aid with high accountability commitments. In alliance with GFH, it will be able to exponentially expand its work and reach greater numbers of people previously unreachable.

GFH has chosen to offer these resources to MERCY Malaysia because as Newton states: “The bottom line is people. Two billion of them who need help, now! Two million women in Africa needing Fistula repair and no help available, tens of thousands of children in neighboring countries and ability needing cleft lip and pallet repair, millions needing cataract removal to restore sight and a myriad of others with everything from disease to dental. All in need! It is not about egos, accolades or prizes, it is about combining resources to make the biggest humanitarian dent and improvement of life in our planet’s entire history!”

Present at the MOU signing were GFH Directors that included Dato’ Dr. Daniel Chan, Neill Newton, Edwin Nicholas and various management members. Representing MERCY Malaysia were its President, EXCO members, partners and senior management members.
