Tuesday – MERCY Malaysia is pleased to announce the opening of its Sarawak Chapter office in Miri. The MERCY Malaysia Sarawak Chapter (MMSC) was established in 2004 and since then our team of volunteers has been providing medical and humanitarian aid to indigenous communities living in the interior of Sarawak. Our mission serves over 5,000 beneficiaries in areas covering Long Bedian, Long Seridan, Long Bemam and Long Silat.
In 2007, with the opening of our operations base, MMSC will be
expanding its humanitarian services in and around Miri as well as
covering a larger footprint in the interior areas of Sarawak.
To commemorate the opening of MMSC’s office, MERCY Malaysia donated two
wheel chairs to the Palliative Care Home Programme. This contribution
is part of MERCY Malaysia’s efforts to expand its collaboration with
other aid organizations in Miri and in time explore projects where both
organizations will be able to share resources and expertise to enhance
the services to the community. A contribution of mandarin oranges was
also made to the children at the Sunflower Center.
Mr Ben Chai, a prominent member of the community in Miri, is the MMSC
Head of Chapter. Mr Ben Chai is a member of MERCY Malaysia and the
pioneer and founding member of the MMSC. The MMSC is located at 54
Piasau Garden, Miri.
MMSC members paid a visit to the General Hospital in Miri and were
given a short briefing by Dr. Uma Devi, Hospital Director. MMSC plans
to work closely with the hospital in future humanitarian missions.
Datuk Dr. Jemilah, President of MERCY Malaysia said “With this set up,
we plan to increase the number of humanitarian missions in Sarawak and
to recruit more volunteers and members to support our aid programmes in
Malaysia and internationally”.
