MERCY Malaysia Sends A Rapid Assessment Team To Vietnam PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 October 2007
KUALA LUMPUR, 11 October 2007 – On October 4 2007, Typhoon Lekima hit Vietnam with a vengeance, causing severe floods and wreckage in six provinces. The six provinces are Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, and Quang Ngai.
The condition in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh are exceptionally poor after being hit by the typhoon, followed by powerful winds and further aggravated by continued rainfall. Consequently, these provinces are currently under water; displacing close to 300,000 people. Vietnam, with a population of 85 million people, is frequently confronted by storms which bring about millions of dollars in destruction and claim hundreds of lives yearly.

As the flood situation escalated, MERCY Malaysia deployed a Rapid Assessment Team of three members to Hanoi on October 9 2007. The team will be working closely with the Vietnamese People’s Aid Coordination Committee (PACCOM), the United Nations and other International NGOs to consolidate all assessment data collected, which in turn will allow better coordination of emergency responses for the affected population. The MERCY team has been assigned to assess the affected province of Ninh Binh from the 11th to13th of October 2007 with support from PACCOM.

The Malaysian Embassy and PETRONAS in Vietnam have pledged strong support for the MERCY Malaysian team which will enhance efficiency of the mission.
