Kuala Lumpur, Tuesday, May 27, 2008: In a handover ceremony held at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) this morning, H.E. Ambassador Cheng Yonghua gratefully acknowledged MERCY Malaysia’s contribution of 5,000 pieces of tarpaulin worth RM 250,000 to the PRC Ministry of Civil Affairs. They will be airlifted to Guangzhou on Thursday, May 29 by MH flight 376 departing at 09:30 for forwarding to the quake area and subsequent distribution to those in need.
Present at the ceremony were, inter alia, Dr. Ahmad Faizal Perdaus, MERCY Malaysia Exco member and Ms. Mona Hanim Sheikh Mahmud, MERCY’s General Manager. MERCY Malaysia is keen on longer-term support of the quake victims and will, in close collaboration with the PRC Embassy as well as accredited non-governmental organizations on the ground, explore avenues of post-emergency interventions, for example the rehabilitation of damaged health centres.
