MERCY MALAYSIA SENDING SURGICAL AND MEDICAL TEAM TO PARIAMAN, INDONESIA TO TREAT EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
Kuala Lumpur, 3 October 2009 – MERCY Malaysia will deploy a surgical and medical team consisting of an orthopaedic surgeon, a general surgeon, an anaesthetist, general practitioners (GPs) and nurses to treat the earthquake victims in and around Pariaman which is located some 80 km north of Padang, Sumatra.

After initial assessments conducted by MERCY Malaysia’s team, it was found that Pariaman (population 600,000), is the second-worst hit area and is in need of medical and relief assistance.

MERCY MALAYSIA SIGNS MoU WITH LOCAL PARTNER TO EXPAND DISTRIBUTION OF HYGIENE KITS IN PHILIPPINES
Kuala Lumpur, 2 October 2009 – MERCY Malaysia has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a local partner, Caritas Novaliches Cathedral in Quezon City, Manila to expand its distribution of hygiene kits to the affected communities in Philippines.

Last Tuesday, MERCY Malaysia deployed a two-team member to Manila to conduct on-theground assessments and distribute hygiene kits to the affected communities after the tropical storm Ketsana hit the country.

Mercy Malaysia Monitoring Situations In Affected Countries Following Succession Of Disasters
Kuala Lumpur, 1 October 2009 – Following the succession of disasters that have pummelled the Asia-Pacific region this week, MERCY Malaysia is on standby and monitoring the situations in the affected countries.

“We will continue to monitor the situations from the headquarters and through our local staff, partners and volunteers in the affected countries. In Vietnam, for instance, we have engaged a local staff to assess the situation and to provide timely updates to headquarters.

MERCY Malaysia's assessment team will leave for Padang, Indonesia by 1 October 2009, Thursday noon via Air Asia
Kuala Lumpur, 1 October 2009 - MERCY Malaysia will deploy a two-member team to Padang, Indonesia in response to the recent earthquake that hit the capital of Sumatra.

The team is led by MERCY Malaysia Senior Programme Support Officer, Maria Lauranti, accompanied by a medical volunteer, Oh Boon Haan. They will be conducting an on-the-ground assessment to determine the humanitarian needs.

MERCY MALAYSIA RESPONDS TO HUMANITARIAN NEEDS IN MANILA - TROPICAL STORM KETSANA

MERCY Malaysia will deploy a two-member team to Manila, Philippines in response to the recent tropical storm Ketsana that pummelled the northern Island of Luzon and metro Manila.

The team is led by MERCY Malaysia Senior Programme Officer, Hew Chong Yew, accompanied by volunteer, Loke Hai Yuan. They will be distributing hygiene kits to the affected communities in areas such as Marikina City, Rizal and Pasig in addition to conducting assessments to learn more of the situation and humanitarian assistance that are needed. A total of RM 100,000 has been allocated from the emergency fund to respond to this recent disaster.

The distribution of hygiene kits is part of MERCY Malaysia's primary work of providing WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) facilities to the victims of the tropical storm. The kit will include basic sanitary items such as toothbrush, shampoo, bath soap, undergarments, sanitary pads, and bath towels, among others.

The team will leave for Manilla, Philippines on 30 September 2009, Wednesday morning via Malaysia Airlines (MAS). The tickets are provided complimentary by MAS as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two organisations in May, this year.

The MoU is part of MAS's continuous Corporate Responsibility Programme which includes providing complimentary return flight tickets to MERCY Malaysia for emergency deployment of relief missions.

MERCY Malaysia will continue to monitor the situation through on-the-ground assessments to look into other areas of humanitarian assistance.
