MERCY MALAYSIA TO ASSESS MEDICAL NEEDS IN SRI LANKA

KUALA LUMPUR: MERCY Malaysia ( www.mercy.org.my) is dispatching a three-member team to Sri Lanka on March 26, 2009, to assess the medical needs of Internally Displaced Persons in the North, particularly at a hospital in Cheddikulam.
The team comprises MERCY Malaysia’s Head of Relief Operations Dr Paul Mettler, Medical Co-ordinator Dr Wan Nurdiana Zaireen Wan Zainal Abidin and Programme Officer Ms Elliane Arriany Mustapha.

MERCY Malaysia stands ready to contribute to the ongoing humanitarian efforts in coordination with the relevant agencies involved, at the invitation of the Ministries of Healthcare and Nutrition, and Resettlement and Emergency Response.
Earlier this month, a team had also visited Sri Lanka with the objective of meeting with various organisations with whom MERCY Malaysia could establish working relationships.
As a result of Sri Lanka’s civil war, tens of thousands have had to seek refuge in safe zones away from their homes. Many have housed in IDP camps, but are still in dire need of healthcare, including both primary and specialised healthcare.
