MERCY MALAYSIA APPEALS FOR RM 1. 2 MILLION (USD  400,000) FOR SRI LANKA

OVER the past two decades, the Sri Lankan people have witnessed the devastating effects of civil war on its men, women and children. The number of people who have become internally displaced has risen dramatically, and we are very concerned.

In March, we decided to respond, sending an assessment team, which was quickly followed by a second and later, third team, which identified possible projects for us to undertake in the area of Cheddikulam.

Since then, we have completed a medical project where we transformed four 40-foot containers into health posts. Each post was equipped with an outpatient room, a pharmacy, a medical screening counter and transit beds.

The health posts will provide medical assistance to a large population of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Menic Farm, Cheddikulam. Our Programme Officer in Cheddikulam, Ms Elliane Arriany Mustapha, handed over the centres to the Sri Lanka Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition on May 8, 2009.

The need among the Sri Lankan people is a desperate one and we want to continue other life-saving projects for this vulnerable community. We have identified the following projects:
  • Providing relevant medical equipment for one of the main health posts as well as one sub-health post in Zone 3.
  • Dispatching MERCY Malaysia medical volunteer doctors on a rotation basis to be based in one of the main health posts for the duration of three months to supplement the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition personnel.
On March 25, we launched the Sri Lanka Relief Fund to finance both the setting up of the health posts and other projects. However, it has been two weeks, but the response has been disheartening.

Please donate to the Sri Lanka Relief Fund and give a chance for a community in despair to survive. Click on “Donate” to see how you can make a difference.
