SYRIA – Obstetrics & Midwifery Programme
Funds required: RM570,000
Project period: Sept 2018 – Sept 2019
The long-drawn war in Syria has destroyed basic facilities such as hospitals, schools, education centres and others, affecting millions of people. One of the worse affected are the children and youths, who face a bleak future. MERCY Malaysia’s Obstetrics & Midwifery programme is the one of its kind in Syria, training young ladies on basic nursing and midwifery to help women in refugee settlements to deliver their babies safely. The service provided is highly critical in this nation where the healthcare system is crippled by conflict.

SYRIA – Winter Relief
Funds required: RM150,000
Project period: Annual basis
For the refugees living in conflict-ridden Syria, if the hunger, injuries and misery does not kill them, the cold will. Temperatures can drop to zero degrees in the night, yet they have little to protect them from the cold except thin blankets, mats and well-worn jackets. Our winter relief items range from food to non-food items such as electrical heaters, winter clothing, firewood, fuel for generators, thick blankets and mats.

Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh has housed 1.2 million Rohingya refugees who escaped the violence in neighbouring Myanmar in the last few years. The refugees live in cramped and over-crowded camps with very little, if any, facilities. In the last 18 months, MERCY Malaysia had been providing humanitarian aid to the refugees at Cox’s Bazar, such as distribute food and non-food items, conduct medical camps and build two healthcare centres there to cater to the medical needs of the refugees.

When the earthquake and tsunami that struck Palu in Sulawesi, Indonesia, first happened in late Sept 2018, we had provided emergency medical relief and assisted in the rebuilding of temporary shelters. Our aim is to assist in the construction of more temporary homes and basic facilities such as schools, toilets and surau.

The situation in Yemen is deteriorating by the day. Prices of fuel and basic commodities continue to rise as the purchasing power of Yemeni families fall. Livelihood opportunities continue to dip, further limiting people’s access to healthcare and food. As a result, millions of people are now unable to meet their basic needs. Recent reports show that 17.8 million people (60% of the population) are food-insecure and 8.4 million (29% of the population) are severely food-insecure and at risk of starvation. Every day, the country moves closer to famine, with one child dying every ten minutes from nutrition-related conditions.
