BACKGROUND

SK Bantayan is a primary school situated in the Inanam district in Kota Kinabalu. Even though it is under Kota Kinabalu’s jurisdiction, the Ministry of Education categorized the school as a rural school due to its remote location. Based on the teacher’s observations, the students there preferred to consume unhealthy snacks and raw instant noodles compared to the fruits and milk provided by the school. This has in turn impacted on the students’ physical growth and learning abilities as compared to the average student. Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort (STAR) under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project proposed to do an intervention for the malnourished students at SK Bantayan Inanam, thus approached MERCY Malaysia Sabah Chapter to partner with them for this project.
